Offering a Variety of Services to Residents in Chignik City
Electric Utility
The City's electric service is powered by three John Deere generators, two of which are rated for 230 kW and the third for 117 kW. There are plans to eventually create hydroelectric power from a dam on Indian Creek.
For the initial electric service, there is a one-time hook-up fee of $140.00 plus a $100.00 deposit. The City's electric utility is regulated and subsidized by the State of Alaska with the Power Cost Equalization (PCE) program. The City charges $0.431 per kWh used, but for the first 500 kWh used per household per month, the State pays $0.2493.
Cable
The City provides cable service only for residents on the west side of town at this time. Cable service costs residents $55.00 per month or any part thereof while in town. Below is a channel guide. Individual programming may be found by clicking on each network's website.

Water and Sewer
The City's water supply comes from Indian Lake Reservoir, from which water is piped down to a water treatment center where it is chlorinated and filtered with green sand, then piped to the water tank for distribution. Water coming into homes is not metered—it costs residents a flat fee of $37.50 per month for water service while in town and a minimum fee of $26.50 while out of town.
Most residents are also on the force main sewer system, which completed upgrades in 2008. Sewer service costs the same as water service.
The water and sewer utility participates in the Rural Utilities Business Advisor (RUBA) program. This program offers technical, managerial, and financial training to utilities across the state. They serve an advisory role to the city, assisting in all matters related to the functions of the municipality.
Solid Waste
The City maintains a solid waste facility on a hill to the northwest of the townsite. Items that can be safely incinerated are dumped into a burn pit, while other used items, such as vehicles, tires, appliances, and batteries are kept to the side. There are also three dumpsters located within the town—one at the harbor, one across from the post office, and another at the bottom of the hill going up to the dump.
At this time, there is not a recycling program in place although there is interest in the idea.
The cost to residents for solid waste service is $15.00 per month or any part thereof while in town. The service is free for residents aged 62 and older.
**PLEASE NOTE** THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ASKS THAT YOU PLEASE USE THE DUMPSTERS FOR YOUR HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE. IF THIS TYPE OF GARBAGE IS LEFT IN THE OPEN BURN PIT, THE WIND, RAVENS, AND MAGPIES END UP DISTRIBUTING IT ACROSS SEVERAL ACRES.
Community Hall
The Community Hall is open Monday–Saturday from noon–1:00 pm and 7:00 pm–9:00 pm. Concessions include a variety of soda and other drinks, chips, candy bars, microwaveable snacks and dinners, and ice cream bars.
Come out and join the fun with a game of pool, put together a puzzle, or watch TV on the big screen!

Port Facilities
A small boat harbor and dock complex has been in the works for over twenty years. Finally, in 2012, the Chignik small boat harbor was ready for use. The harbor is 12–17 feet deep at low tide and can accommodate over 40 vessels. But with the harbor at full capacity, designs are being drawn up to finish the inner components of the harbor, including at least 20 more slips, an 87' x 84' seine float, a sheet pile bulkhead dock, and a 40-ton boat lift.
For questions about mooring space during the fall & winter months, call the City Clerk's Office at (907) 749-2280, or call the Harbormaster's Office from June to August at (907) 749-2284.
